For years, the ATV industry has largely ignored the mid-size sport segment, leaving enthusiasts to scour the used market for relics. As reported by Dirt Wheels, the 2026 Kayo Storm 300 arrives as a direct response to this void. While it isn't intended to challenge high-performance 450cc race machines, it successfully occupies the 300cc space with a package that feels surprisingly refined.
The engine, a 292.4cc liquid-cooled, EFI-fed, DOHC four-valve single, bears a strong resemblance to the Kawasaki KLX300 powerplant. During testing at the Twisted Lizard Speedway, riders noted the engine provides a broad, friendly powerband that pulls effectively from low rpm, reducing the need for constant gear changes. This makes the machine accessible for novices while maintaining enough punch to satisfy experienced riders.
Testing conducted by Dirt Wheels staff and seasoned racers Gregg Conroy and Jeff Henson highlighted the machine's chassis dynamics. The Storm 300 features geometry that some tuners compare to the discontinued Yamaha Raptor 250, resulting in a light, intuitive feel in corners. Importantly, the U.S. version addressed early criticisms regarding track width, arriving with a wider rear axle that significantly improves handling stability compared to the international prototype.
Perhaps the most unexpected highlight is the five-speed manual transmission. Rather than the vague, clunky shifting often found on budget-friendly ATVs, the Storm 300 offers a positive, crisp feel that rivals legacy Japanese sport quads. Clutch engagement is predictable, and the transmission handles high-load downshifts without issue.
With a dyno-tested 24.9 rear-wheel horsepower, the Storm 300 punches well above its class, nearing the performance territory once held by the Honda 400EX. While the stock intake is somewhat restrictive, the machine is already potent in its factory configuration. For those looking to customize, the chassis and engine provide a solid foundation for further tuning, making the Kayo Storm 300 a significant addition to the modern sport ATV landscape.
