The ATV racing world is mourning the loss of Joe Byrd, a legendary figure in the sport. Byrd passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2026, in Union City, Tennessee, at the age of 53. According to Dirt Wheels Magazine, he was surrounded by family at the time of his death. Byrd had recently been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.

Joe Byrd was a central figure in ATV motocross for many years. He earned respect for his speed and skill. His accomplishments include:

  • Two-time AMA Pro ATV Motocross National Champion (2006, 2007)
  • ATVA National No. 1 plate holder
  • More than 35 pro class victories
  • Notable performances, such as a 1-1 sweep at Birch Creek Motorsports and standout rides at RedBud MX
  • Fastest qualifying time at Budds Creek Motocross Park in 2012

Byrd was associated with American Honda for a significant portion of his career. He remained involved in the sport after his racing career, offering coaching and riding schools.

Many racers are planning to honor Byrd's memory by displaying the number 7 on their helmets. There is no official decal. Dirt Wheels Magazine suggests using a simple vinyl number, a hand-cut sticker, or even tape with the number 7 written on it.
